As New York attorneys, we are often asked: "If I get points in New York State, will they transfer to my out of state license?" We know that, at least in theory, points accrued in New York State are supposed to be reported out to states that are members of the Interstate Drivers License Compact as well as the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, Canada. I have always wondered whether in practice those points will indeed show up on that out of state license, and if so, how many points will show up on an out of state license if a driver gets a speeding or other moving violation in New York State and is ultimately convicted. For instance, I am told that New York points will transfer to New Jersey (another state where I am admitted to practice and maintain an office) but only a maximum of two points will show on on the New Jersey driver's driving record. Do any of you have experiences with states other than New Jersey? How about Canada?
