Attending Driving School to Reduce Your Ticket

When a driver in Texas receives a speeding ticket, there might be a way to get the amount of the ticket reduced or even dismissed by successfully completing a safe driving course. Texas uses a “points” system for driving records; every time a driver receives a violation, license suspension, or is involved in an accident, points are added to their record. It is in the best interest of drivers to always be aware of their record and driving history, which is available through the Texas Driver Records Bureau.

Sometimes drivers make speeding mistakes. The traffic laws of Texas recognize this and have developed several ways for drivers to make amends for their violations. Defendants can enroll in a school offering defensive driver safety courses to help them understand their mistakes and work to improve their driving skills. Some programs are online while others are taught in traditional classrooms with instructors. Drivers must attend class, study, and pass exams based upon the learning material. Not all schools are certified by the state of Texas, so defendants must make sure that their program will be accepted by the court.

If a defendant makes arrangements to attend driving school and then misses the class deadline, they must notify the court to ask for an extension. This might not be granted, but it is important for the defendant to contact the court so they are not declared delinquent or in contempt.

Drivers may choose to take driving school classes even when they are not faced with a ticket situation. Some auto insurance companies look favorably upon this type of proactive driving behavior and assume drivers will learn safety tips and ways to improve driving skills, which can be reflected in premium rates.

For drivers with repeat offenses, defensive driving school might not be an option. Contesting a speeding ticket can be a lengthy and confusing process, and it is in the best interest of the defendant to consult an attorney who specializes in traffic laws. The process of attending driving school is different depending on the Texas county, jurisdiction, and the severity of the traffic violation. Traffic attorneys are familiar with all types of situations and can offer expert advice to drivers facing serious penalties. It is worth it to use the services of a professional to contest traffic tickets.
