Drivers share the road with pedestrians and bicycle riders and need to pay attention to riders to avoid tragic accidents. However, bicycle riders have a responsibility to know the traffic laws that apply to their type of riding. Here is an overview of many of the common questions that people have about bicycle safety laws.

Bicycle riders who are riding on a roadway must follow the same traffic laws as a car driver. This includes things such as stopping at a stop sign and obeying traffic lights. Riders should go with the flow of traffic, and of course always wear a helmet and reflective clothing. If it is dark outside, the bike must be equipped with a white front light and a red rear reflector light; additional lights such as a rear flashing light are suggested.

If a bicyclist is able to keep up with the flow of traffic, they may ride in any lane. If they are slower than traffic, they should ride as far over to the right side as possible. If there is very limited access, the bicycle rider may be on the shoulder. If they are riding in groups, it is permissible to have two bicyclists riding side by side.

Cyclists may ride on sidewalks but must yield to pedestrians. They may also ride on roadways, even if a bike path is available. There are certain roads that are restricted to bicycles, such as limited access highways. There will usually be signs designating the restrictions.

When turning, cyclists should use hand signals - for a left turn, the left hand and arm should extend horizontally; for a right turn, the left hand and arm extend upward with the elbow at a 90 degree angle, or the right hand and arm extend horizontally. When bicyclists carry backpacks, packages, or any articles, it must allow for at least one hand to remain on the handlebars. The bicycle itself must be equipped with a working brake system, and a rider is never allowed to attach themselves to any type of vehicle while moving.
