It is very important that drivers have the correct address on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Illinois. If the DMV ever sends any type of warning or declaration of a license suspension, it is the driver’s responsibility to receive that message.
The basic requirements to apply for a first time driver’s license in Illinois are proof of ID, parental consent if the driver is under the age of 18, and passage of the written, vision, and driving tests. The applicant may retake the written or driving test if they fail it the first time. Drivers should prepare for the tests by studying the Driver’s Handbook that is published by the DMV.
For Illinois residents who have a license from another state, they must pass the vision test but may be exempt from the written and driving exams. They must also show proof of ID and must give up their license from another state before accepting the Illinois license.
To renew a driver’s license, a driver will be notified by mail from the Secretary of State’s office at least one month prior to the expiration date. Some drivers may be able to renew their license online if they qualify for the Safe Driver program, which means they are between the ages of 22 and 74 and have a clean driving record. Drivers should check that their address is current with the DMV.
For residents who do not drive, they may apply for a non-driver identification card. They must provide their Social Security number, proof of birth date, proof of address, and written signature. This photo ID card can be used to prove your name, address, and age. An ID card is valid for five years.
To apply for a new driver’s license to replace one that is lost, stolen, or damaged, the driver must do so in person at a Driver Services Department office. They must provide proof of identification and proof of birth date or Social Security number.
Every type of license or ID has a fee associated through the DMV; drivers should make sure they have the proper funds to pay for their card.
