Driving in Texas With a Suspended License Can Have Tough Consequences

A suspended license can be devastating to a driver who depends upon their vehicle for driving to work, school, or personal and family events. Driving with a suspended license in the state of Texas is a serious offense; if convicted, the penalties can include fines and extremely high insurance rates. Drivers should always know the status of their license and driving record. This information can be found with the Driver Records Bureau within the state of Texas and drivers can order copies of their records.

There are many instances that can lead to a suspended license. They include many situations involving DUI or DWI including refusal to cooperate with law enforcement, exceptionally high blood alcohol content, or repeat offenses. Drivers with multiple unpaid tickets, no car insurance, or those with drug convictions are also in danger of losing their license. Some medical conditions that affect driving can lead to a license suspension if the driver is unsafe behind the wheel. In some cases, individuals who are delinquent with child support payments can lose their license. The state of Texas recognizes suspended licenses from other states, so drivers do not have a “free pass” to drive in Texas if they have a suspended license from another state.

In rare instances, drivers with a suspended license can apply for a restricted license if the driver can prove that driving is essential for their livelihood. Even if a restricted license is granted, it does not allow drivers full driving freedom. Reinstating a suspended license varies upon the circumstances and can take anywhere from a few months to several years. In almost every case, fines, proof of auto insurance, and documentation are necessary for a reinstatement.

Drivers should try and avoid license suspension by following traffic laws and maintaining insurance. If you do find yourself facing a license suspension, the best thing to do is consult an attorney who specializes in traffic laws. Lawyers have the experience and knowledge necessary to protect the driving rights of the defendant. They are also familiar with the intricacies of the court system of Texas, which can be very confusing to the average person. Using a traffic lawyer is the best way to avoid a license suspension.
