Speeding is always a serious violation that can lead to dangerous accidents. The state of Georgia believes that some speeding offenses should result in harsher penalties and therefore passed the Georgia Super Speeder law on January 1, 2010. The law penalizes drivers who are convicted of either driving 75 mph or more on any two lane highway or road or driving at 85 mph or more on any type of road. In addition to their regular speeding ticket, these drivers will be fined an additional fee of $200. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) will send the defendant a letter within 30 days of the violation stating that they have been classified as a “Super Speeder” and owe an extra $200. The defendant has 90 days to pay the fine. It should be noted that the DDS will only send one notice to the defendant; the letter will be mailed to the address that they have on file. Therefore, all drivers should make sure that the DDS has their current address on file. Not receiving the letter is not an acceptable excuse for missing the deadline to pay the fine.

If the defendant does not pay the $200 fine within 90 days, their license will be automatically suspended. When the defendant does finally pay the fine, they will have to pay an additional $50 to have their license reinstated. They also risk being pulled over without a license, which can lead to many different types of serious violations.

The main purpose of the Super Speeder law is to discourage drivers from excessively high speeds, which can lead to devastating accidents. According to the DDS, the state of Georgia sees approximately one death per day from accidents related to speeding. It is also estimated that 60% of patients in hospital trauma rooms are suffering from injuries related to speeding accidents. In addition to acting as a deterrent, a portion of the fees that are collected from the law have been designated to benefit the Georgia hospital systems.
