Driving a motorcycle is very different than driving a car, and there are special rules and restrictions from the Department of Driver Services (DDS) in Georgia for motorcycle riders. There are many different reasons that people like motorcycles: they are cheaper than cars, smaller and easier to park, and many people simply find them enjoyable.
Drivers must have a motorcycle permit and license, which is called a class M license. Mopeds, which are vehicles similar to motorcycles but do not go as fast and are usually smaller, are not permitted on highways and do not require an extra license. To accomplish this, they must first apply for a permit. Drivers must pay the application fee, give a thumb print, have their picture taken for the permit, pass a vision test, and pass a written exam. The written exam is all about traffic signs and traffic laws. There are many places online to find practice exams; the Georgia Motorcycle Operator’s Manual can be downloaded and is full of all the information needed for the test. Topics include: safety precautions, carrying passengers or baggage, safety gear needed, mechanical issues with the motorcycle, traffic laws, and motorcycle restrictions.
If the applicant is under the age of 18, they must also provide a signature from a parent or guardian allowing the motorcycle permit.
The instruction permit or learner’s permit allows the driver to practice riding their motorcycle for a period of six months to two years. The permit restricts the driving privileges and the driver may not drive on a highway or freeway, drive at night, or carry any passengers on their motorcycle.
After the period of time on the permit expires, the driver may apply for a motorcycle license. To do this, they must surrender their current license to receive one that has a motorcycle endorsement or a class M. If the driver is under the age of 18, they must complete a motorcycle safety program through the Georgia DDS. If the driver is over the age of 18, they must complete the same course or they may pass a motorcycle driving test through the DDS.
