Occupational License in South Carolina

To drive certain types of vehicles, drivers need a different license than just a traditional driver’s license. A commercial driver license (CDL) is needed for the following types of vehicles:

Class A - a vehicle or truck whose weight is over 26,000 pounds and is towing weight that is over 10,000 pounds

Class B - a vehicle or truck whose weight is over 26,000 pounds but is not towing

Class C - a vehicle or truck whose weight is over 26,000 pounds and is carrying at least sixteen people (including the driver) OR is towing hazardous material.

In some professions, drivers who have a CDL must also have special endorsements to legally drive their load. For example, school bus drivers must have a passenger (P) endorsement and a school bus (S) endorsement. Shuttle buses are different than school buses. There are several different types, and drivers may need endorsements depending upon the type of van or bus. Some states require an Emergency Vehicle Operators certificate to drive an ambulance. (South Carolina does not.)

To drive a taxi cab, drivers do not universally need a special endorsement. However, these companies are privately owned and may require their employees to be certified in special types of driving. It can also depend upon the local traffic laws. Chauffeurs are drivers who operate limousines. Like taxi drivers, they are not necessarily required to have special training or endorsement unless it is required by their specific employer. It is always a good idea, however, for drivers who will be transporting large amounts of people to get as much training and education as possible to be safe drivers.

There are many other types of vehicles. The following require special endorsements in South Carolina:

Forklift operation - CDL and certification in forklift operation which extensively covers all issues with forklifts such as lifting, safety, and stability of the vehicle

Bulldozer operation - CDL to haul the bulldozer and a certification to operation the bulldozer.
