Wisconsin uses a points system to keep track of traffic violations. Drivers who accumulate too many points can face consequences such as a license suspension or revocation. On many occasions, drivers receive tickets because they are acting recklessly or dangerously. Behaviors that can be classified as “road rage” or aggressive driving include:
· Tailgating or following too closely; drivers should keep a “three second” distance between themselves and other cars to avoid collisions
· Stopping suddenly if you are being tailgated
· Speeding or swerving
· Cutting off other drivers
· Dangerous passing, such as passing on a shoulder or passing and then pulling in front of the passed car too quickly
· Shouting, swearing, or making rude hand gestures to other drivers
· Flashing regular or high beam lights at other drivers
· Honking at other drivers unnecessarily
· Running yellow or red lights or stop signs.
Often drivers who find themselves stuck in traffic or running late will revert to some of these dangerous actions. It is important for drivers to remain calm and plan ahead for any traffic revisions or delays to arrive at their destination safely and in a timely manner.
Drivers can also make mistakes driving if they are drowsy, sick, or stressed out. Drivers should try and avoid driving in these situations if at all possible. Obviously, anyone who has been drinking should avoid driving at all costs. They may feel like they are sober enough to drive, but in reality, alcohol can significantly slow down a driver’s ability to react to obstacles and stay alert.
Drivers should avoid distractions while driving such as eating, drinking, playing excessively loud music, arguing, putting on makeup, or using a cell phone. Texting while driving is illegal in Wisconsin, and drivers should use a hands free device if they feel like they must talk on their cell phone while driving.
Drivers who receive traffic tickets risk adding points to their driving record, which can lead to license suspension and increased auto insurance rates. Drivers who are facing a traffic ticket conviction should consult an attorney who specializes in traffic laws.
