Traffic tickets can be very stressful for drivers. It is important to always obey the traffic laws to avoid getting a ticket. However, most drivers will be faced with many tickets throughout their driving careers. Contesting a ticket can be a good idea for drivers who do not want their driving records negatively affected by a conviction.

The state of Wisconsin uses a points system to track traffic convictions. Every offense has a certain number of points. The more serious the offense, the higher the points value. Non moving violations such as parking tickets are not entered through the points system. Drivers who accumulate an excessive number of points will receive a notice from the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) advising them that their license has been suspended. It is the responsibility of the driver to have their correct address on file with the DMV.

To avoid getting a ticket, drivers should follow safety rules. “Road rage” is often the cause of accidents or violations. Drivers should remember the following:

1. Avoid tailgating or swearing at other drivers

2. Give yourself extra time if you know you’ll be faced with heavy traffic or poor driving conditions such as rain or snow

3. Avoid cutting off other vehicles, angrily honking the horn, or flashing lights at other drivers

4. Do not speed, run through red lights, or disobey traffic signals.

Drivers should avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, putting on makeup, or arguing with any passengers when driving. Drivers should not drive when they are excessively tired, sick, or stressed. Inattention to the road can lead to accidents and traffic violations.

To avoid collisions, drivers should practice the three second rule. To do this, watch the car ahead of you pass a milestone, and then count how long it takes you to get to the same spot. It should take at least three seconds, which would allow you enough time to brake suddenly if necessary.

Drivers facing a traffic violation conviction should consult an attorney who specializes in traffic law to avoid penalties or a license suspension.
